Shuri Fukunaga has held one of Japan's highest profile communications roles as General Manager of Nissan's Global Communications during the critical years of the giant automaker's revival. She returned to communications consulting at Burson-Marsteller in October 2003.
Shuri became General Manager of Communications at Nissan Motor Company in April 2001. In 2002, she became General Manager of Global Communications Strategy & Planning. Her mandate was to enhance motivation among employees and regain the global confidence of stakeholders for the 160,000-person company that had met "a near-death experience."
Prior to Nissan -- from November 1993 to March 2001 -- Shuri headed Corporate Communications in Asia Pacific for J.P. Morgan.
She joined J.P. Morgan from Burson-Marsteller. In her first tenure starting 1986 at Burson-Marsteller in Tokyo, she was Vice President, Corporate/Financial Practice.
Upon returning to Burson-Marsteller this time, she successfully guided communications and reputation management for a major financial group merger. The case involved Japan's first contested banking merger. She was also led the Greater Nagoya Initiative, a regional Invest-in-Japan program, which was one of the first projects ever of the scale ever where the Japanese government commissioned a multi-mix communications program to a foreign-affiliated public relations agency. |
